A practical reference on peptide purity: what it is, how it behaves, what the literature reports, and where the honest uncertainties sit.
This page was last updated on 2026-05-27 and is reviewed periodically as new material appears.
Most published findings come from rodent experiments using induced injury or surgical models. Human reports remain scarce and are largely observational, which limits how much can be stated with confidence. Questions about absorption, distribution, metabolism, and clearance in people are still open. Dose translation between species is likewise unresolved. Researchers tend to read the animal literature as a starting point rather than a settled account.
BPC-157 is a synthetic peptide composed of fifteen amino acids. Its sequence corresponds to part of a protein found in human gastric juice, which is the origin of the "body protection compound" label. In laboratory work the material is treated as a defined research chemical rather than a finished product. Published research has centered on animal models, and the peptide is not an approved medicine in most countries.
The peptide was first described in the early 1990s by a group studying gastric secretions and tissue repair. Its fifteen-residue chain is usually written as GEPPPGKPADDAGLV in single-letter code. The free peptide has the formula C62H98N16O22 and a theoretical mass near 1419.5 daltons. These identifiers are established chemical facts that can be checked against standard peptide databases. There is no ambiguity about the primary structure.
Once dissolved, the material is considerably less stable than the dry solid. Aqueous solutions are usually kept cold and used within a short window, and neutral or mildly acidic buffers are preferred over strongly alkaline conditions. Freeze-thaw cycles promote aggregation and loss of material to container surfaces, so dividing a batch into single-use aliquots is standard. Adsorption to plastic and glass can lower the measured concentration, meaning solution strength may need rechecking before an experiment.
Identity and purity are established with complementary methods rather than one test. Reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography separates the main peak from deletion sequences and oxidized variants, and its area percentage is the usual purity figure. Mass spectrometry confirms the expected molecular mass and can flag truncations or modifications that chromatography alone might miss. Amino acid analysis and peptide mapping add sequence-level confirmation, while residual counter-ion and water content are measured separately.
| Property | Value | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Amino acid count | 15 residues | Synthetic pentadecapeptide chain |
| Sequence | GEPPPGKPADDAGLV | Single-letter amino acid code |
| Molecular formula | C62H98N16O22 | Free peptide, without counter-ion |
| Theoretical mass | Approximately 1419.5 daltons | Varies slightly with adducts and counter-ions |
| Origin | Fragment of a human gastric juice protein | Source of the BPC designation |
Analytical results depend on the column, gradient, and detector wavelength chosen by the laboratory, so purity values from different sources are not always directly comparable. Water content, counterion form, and residual trifluoroacetate affect both mass and purity calculations. Microbiological and endotoxin testing are separate from chemical purity and are not covered by a standard chromatographic run. Buyers evaluating a material typically request the full method description rather than a single purity figure.
Lyophilized peptide powder is generally stored at minus twenty degrees Celsius or lower and kept away from light and moisture. Under these conditions degradation is slow, and sealed vials remain stable for extended periods. Once dissolved, the material is less stable, particularly in aqueous buffers near neutral pH, where hydrolysis and oxidation proceed faster. Solutions are usually kept cold and used within days to weeks. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles are avoided because they encourage aggregation.
Within the research literature, the peptide is discussed through several provisional mechanisms, including cytoprotection, modulation of growth factor signaling, and interaction with the nitric oxide system. None of these mechanisms is fully characterized, and no single pathway is universally accepted. Review articles typically note the gap between consistent animal findings and sparse human evidence. The compound is classified as a research chemical rather than an approved pharmaceutical, which shapes how studies are designed, funded, and reported.
BPC-157 is a synthetic pentadecapeptide with the sequence GEPPPGKPADDAGLV, corresponding to a partial fragment of a larger protein detected in human gastric juice. The name derives from the parent protein designation BPC, an abbreviation of body protection compound, with 157 acting as a fraction or batch identifier used by the original investigators. Its molecular weight is approximately 1419 daltons, and the chain contains no unusual residues or disulfide bridges. In the literature it is described as a short, water-soluble fragment rather than a complete natural protein.
Nelson turned Fruton on to biochemistry. He received his degree in chemistry in 1931, and entered graduate school in the Department of Biological Chemistry in the Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons, working under Hans Thacher Clarke. Fruton's PhD work focused on "the lability of cystine in alkali", although he developed a broad interest in the range of biochemistry-related research being pursued at the College of Physicians and Surgeons. During graduate school Fruton also became active politically, opposing fascism, militarism and anti-Semitism. In 1933 he met Sophia "Topsy" Simmonds, whom he married in 1936. Upon completing his PhD in May 1934, Fruton became a research assistant to Max Bergmann at the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research.
== Formulation == Aulus Cornelius Celsus details one version of the antidote in De Medicina (ca. AD 30). A recent translation is as follows: "But the most famous antidote is that of Mithridates, which that king is said to have taken daily and by it to have rendered his body safe against danger from poison". === Clinical trials === Phase II clinical trials are in progress for treatment of endometrial cancer, diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, cholangiocarcinoma, and non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Copanlisib in combination with R-CHOP or R-B (rituximab and bendamustine) is in a phase III trial for relapsed indolent non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). Two separate phase III trials are investigating the use of copanlisib in combination with rituximab for indolent NHL and the other using copanlisib alone in cases of rituximab-refractory indolent NHL. In a preclinical study, copanlisib was effective in inhibiting HER2+ breast cancer cells with acquired resistance to the HER2-inhibitors trastuzumab and/or lapatinib. This effect was increased when copanlisib was administered along with the aforementioned HER2-inhibitors. Consequently, treatments of copanlisib with trastuzumab are being clinically trialled in HER2-positive breast cancer patients.
The 2026 Israel–Lebanon ceasefire is a cessation of hostilities agreed between Israel and Lebanon on 16 April 2026, amid the ongoing 2026 Lebanon war and wider regional conflict linked to the 2026 Iran war. The agreement, brokered by the United States, established a 10-day truce intended to halt active fighting and create conditions for further negotiations toward a longer-term settlement. The ceasefire came into effect shortly after its announcement and marked the first direct diplomatic engagement between Israel and Lebanon in decades. On 17 April, Iran announced that passage of commercial vessels through the Hormuz Strait was completely open during the truce in Lebanon, but closed it again the next day in response to the US refusal to lift its naval blockade. On 23 April, US President Donald Trump announced that Israel and Lebanon agreed to a three-week extension of the ceasefire. On 27 April, Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem stated that the group will not revert to the pre-March status and will respond to Israeli attacks. On 15 May, the truce was extended for another 45 days. On 1 June, Israel and Hezbollah agreed to a ceasefire, with Israel committing not to target Beirut's southern suburbs and Hezbollah vowing not to attack Israel, under a US proposal aiming to extend the ceasefire to all of Lebanon. On 3 June, Israel and Lebanon agreed to renew the ceasefire, mediated by the US, and plan to establish "pilot zones".

Magic numbers of 2, 8, 20, 28, 50, 82 and 126 have been observed for neutrons, and the next number is predicted to be 184. Protons share the first six of these magic numbers, and 126 has been predicted as a magic proton number since the 1940s. Nuclides with a magic number of each—such as 16O (Z = 8, N = 8), 132Sn (Z = 50, N = 82), and 208Pb (Z = 82, N = 126)—are referred to as "doubly magic" and are more stable than nearby nuclides as a result of greater binding energies. In the late 1960s, more sophisticated shell models were formulated by American physicist William Myers and Polish physicist Władysław Świątecki, and independently by German physicist Heiner Meldner (1939–2019). With these models, taking into account Coulomb repulsion, Meldner predicted that the next proton magic number may be 114 instead of 126. Myers and Świątecki appear to have coined the term "island of stability", and American chemist Glenn Seaborg, later a discoverer of many of the superheavy elements, quickly adopted the term and promoted it. Myers and Świątecki also proposed that some superheavy nuclei would be longer-lived as a consequence of higher fission barriers. Further improvements in the nuclear shell model by Soviet physicist Vilen Strutinsky led to the emergence of the macroscopic–microscopic method, a nuclear mass model that takes into consideration both smooth trends characteristic of the liquid-drop model and local fluctuations such as shell effects.
=== Fatty acids === Plant-based, or vegetarian, sources of Omega 3 fatty acids include soy, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, canola oil, kiwifruit, hempseed, algae, chia seed, flaxseed, echium seed and leafy vegetables such as lettuce, spinach, cabbage and purslane. Purslane contains more Omega 3 than any other known leafy green. Olives (and olive oil) are another important plant source of unsaturated fatty acids. Plant foods can provide alpha-linolenic acid which the human body uses to synthesize the long-chain n-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA. EPA and DHA can be obtained directly in high amounts from oily fish, fish oil, or algae oil. Vegetarians, and particularly vegans, have lower levels of EPA and DHA than meat-eaters. While the health effects of low levels of EPA and DHA are unknown, it is unlikely that supplementation with alpha-linolenic acid will significantly increase levels.. Significantly, for vegetarians, certain algae such as spirulina are good sources of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), linoleic acid (LA), stearidonic acid (SDA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and arachidonic acid (AA).
=== Storage and excretion === How fast B12 levels change depends on the balance between how much B12 is obtained from the diet, how much is secreted and how much is absorbed. The total amount of vitamin B12 stored in the body is about 2–5 mg in adults. Around 50% of this is stored in the liver. Approximately 0.1% of this is lost per day by secretions into the gut, as not all these secretions are reabsorbed. Bile is the main form of B12 excretion; most of the B12 secreted in the bile is recycled via enterohepatic circulation. Excess B12 beyond the blood's binding capacity is typically excreted in urine. Owing to the extremely efficient enterohepatic circulation of B12, the liver can store 3 to 5 years' worth of vitamin B12; therefore, nutritional deficiency of this vitamin is rare in adults in the absence of malabsorption disorders. In the absence of intrinsic factor or distal ileum receptors, only months to a year of vitamin B12 are stored.
Modafinil's precise mechanism of action in narcolepsy and other sleep disorders remains incompletely understood. Nevertheless, in animals and in humans modafinil acts primarily as an atypical dopamine transporter (DAT) inhibitor or dopamine reuptake inhibitor (DRI), producing a modest increase in extracellular dopamine in cortical and striatal brain regions without inducing the rapid dopamine signaling characteristic of classical stimulants such as amphetamine or cocaine. This modest dopaminergic effect is accompanied by broader downstream activation of arousal-related neurotransmitter systems. Modafinil increases noradrenergic tone in wakefulness-promoting nuclei and indirectly engages hypothalamic orexin and histamine pathways, which together help stabilize the sleep–wake regulatory network and support sustained alertness. Although modafinil interacts with multiple neurotransmitter systems, its exact mode of action at the molecular level remains uncertain. At the level of neural circuits, modafinil enhances glutamatergic excitatory transmission and reduces GABAergic inhibitory output within cortical and thalamic pathways, shifting network activity toward excitation and cortical activation while exerting minimal direct effects on classical monoamine receptors.
=== 26 March === The SAF retook Khartoum International Airport and the Manshiya Bridge over the Blue Nile in Khartoum. It also retook the Tiba al-Hassanab camp in Jabal Aulia, which is described as the RSF's last stronghold in Khartoum and its main base in central Sudan. Al-Burhan visited the presidential palace in Khartoum and announced the liberation of the city, proclaiming that "Khartoum is free".

== Low-cost laboratory automation == A large obstacle to the implementation of automation in laboratories has been its high cost. Many laboratory instruments are very expensive. This is justifiable in many cases, as such equipment can perform very specific tasks employing cutting-edge technology. However, there are devices employed in the laboratory that are not highly technological but still are very expensive. This is the case of many automated devices, which perform tasks that could easily be done by simple and low-cost devices like simple robotic arms, universal (open-source) electronic modules, Lego Mindstorms, or 3D printers. So far, using such low-cost devices together with laboratory equipment was considered to be difficult. However, it has been demonstrated that such low-cost devices can substitute for the standard machines used in laboratory without problems. It can be anticipated that more laboratories will take advantage of this as low-cost automation is very attractive for laboratories. A technology that enables the integration of any machine regardless of their brand is scripting, more specifically, scripting involving the control of mouse clicks and keyboard entries, like AutoIt. By timing clicks and keyboard inputs, different software interfaces controlling different devices can be perfectly synchronized.
Orthogonal protection is a strategy allowing the specific deprotection of one protective group in a multiply-protected structure. For example, the amino acid tyrosine could be protected as a benzyl ester on the carboxyl group, a fluorenylmethylenoxy carbamate on the amine group, and a tert-butyl ether on the phenol group. The benzyl ester can be removed by hydrogenolysis, the fluorenylmethylenoxy group (Fmoc) by bases (such as piperidine), and the phenolic tert-butyl ether cleaved with acids (e.g. with trifluoroacetic acid). A common example for this application, the Fmoc peptide synthesis, in which peptides are grown in solution and on solid phase, is very important. The protecting groups in solid-phase synthesis regarding the reaction conditions such as reaction time, temperature and reagents can be standardized so that they are carried out by a machine, while yields of well over 99% can be achieved. Otherwise, the separation of the resulting mixture of reaction products is virtually impossible (see also § Industrial applications).
Cardiac muscle (also called heart muscle or myocardium) is one of three types of vertebrate muscle tissues, the others being skeletal muscle and smooth muscle. It is an involuntary, striated muscle that constitutes the main tissue of the wall of the heart. The cardiac muscle (myocardium) forms a thick middle layer between the outer layer of the heart wall (the pericardium) and the inner layer (the endocardium), with blood supplied via the coronary circulation. It is composed of individual cardiac muscle cells joined by intercalated discs, and encased by collagen fibers and other substances that form the extracellular matrix. Cardiac muscle contracts in a similar manner to skeletal muscle, although with some important differences. Electrical stimulation in the form of a cardiac action potential triggers the release of calcium from the cell's internal calcium store, the sarcoplasmic reticulum. The rise in calcium causes the cell's myofilaments to slide past each other in a process called excitation-contraction coupling. Diseases of the heart muscle known as cardiomyopathies are of major importance. These include ischemic conditions caused by a restricted blood supply to the muscle such as angina, and myocardial infarction.

==== Increased limit for tax deductions for state and local taxes ==== From January 1, 2025, to December 31, 2029, individuals may take a tax deduction for up to $40,000 of state and local taxes ($20,000 if married filing separately), which is an increase from $10,000 previously. There is a reduction to the limit for the tax deduction for individuals whose modified adjusted gross income is over $500,000 ($250,000 for married filing separately) but it never goes below $10,000. This provision has an estimated cost of $142 billion. Republican representatives Elise Stefanik, Mike Lawler, Nick LaLota, and Andrew Garbarino of New York, Representative Young Kim of California, and Representative Tom Kean Jr. of New Jersey cut this deal with House speaker Mike Johnson in exchange for their votes.

The peptide is synthetic, but its sequence matches a segment of a protein present in human gastric juice. It does not occur as a free fifteen-residue peptide in the body.
Rodents account for the large majority of published experiments. Human data are sparse and mostly observational, so cross-species extrapolation remains uncertain.
It is not an approved therapeutic in most jurisdictions. Regulatory status varies by country, and several places restrict it as a research chemical.
Low temperature slows the chemical reactions, such as oxidation and hydrolysis, that break down a peptide chain. Water and oxygen are the main drivers of degradation, so a cold and dry environment extends usable life. Actual shelf life depends on the batch, the salt form, and the container.
